Sailors Triumph in First Game of 2016
The PeeWee Scotiabank LL2 began the 2016 portion of their season with a convincing 5-1 win over the Lucknow Sepoys at the Lucknow arena Saturday afternoon.  The Sepoys came out strong and challenged the Sailors who found it difficult to penetrate the Lucknow defense early in the game.  The Sailors persevered and finally notched their first goal with less than a minute remaining in the opening period when Remi W scored on a nice assist from Jack L.

The Sailors came out strong in the second period and maintained puck possession with a lot of elaborate passing but were unable to get many shots on net.  Eventually the Sailors wore down the Sepoy defense and, once again, Remi W scored a nice goal on a beauty pass from Jack L.

The third period saw the Sailors returning to their pre-Christmas form when their passing became more crisp and a multitude of shots found their way to the Lucknow net.  The third period scoring started with an end-to-end rush by elusive defensemen Aidan A who really used his head to score on a determined solo effort.  A minute-and-a-half later the Sailors scored again when fellow defender Kaleb C took a pass from Liam D and then dangled around a few Lucknow players before firing a nice wrist shot into the back of the net.  The final Goderich goal was scored on a breakaway goal by Jack L – the breakaway came as a result of a superlative pass from defensemen Aidan A.

In addition to finding the net, the Sailors played a strong game on defense.  Defensemen Kaleb C, Aidan A, Cole W and Caden B played hard and stifled the Lucknow forwards whenever the came into the Goderich zone.  On the few occasions when the Lucknow forwards managed to break through the Sailor’s defense Grayson O was there to make key saves with a quick flash of his glove or a timely kick of his pads.  Grayson played a great game and almost came away with a shut-out but the Sepoys managed to score on a power-play in the final minute of the game.  Nice game Sailors!
