Young Canada Week - Medal Round
The Young Canada Week medal round began with a Sunday morning game against Mt. Forest.  The Sailors took the lead scoring early in the first period on a nifty backhander (goal by Joey C assisted by Remi W) that went over the shoulder of the flailing Mt. Forest goalie.  The Sailors went on to score the second goal of the game at 9:52 of the second when Daerien R (assist to Cole W) got a shot off from within a scrum of Sailor forwards who were crashing the Mt. Forest net.  The Sailors went into the change room with a 2-0 lead going into the third.

The third period proved that the Mt. Forest players were not about to give up – they came out and scored two goals within the first minute of play.  With the game suddenly tied and with momentum clearly on Mt. Forest’s side, the Sailors were in trouble.  Luckily, the Sailors came together and began being more responsible in their own end.  From there, clearing their zone created opportunities to go on the attack and at 8:35 of the third Daerien R scored her second goal of the game (assisted by Spencer W and Joey C).  With deft defensive play and solid goaltending the Sailors were able to keep Mt. Forest off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period and earned their place in the Gold medal game against Goderich Kinsmen LL1.

The gold medal round between the two Goderich Pee Wee LL teams was a pretty cool event for the Goderich Lion’s 67th Annual Young Canada Week Pee Wee Tournament.  It was an exciting game for the town, for the players, coaches and parents on both sides.  The fact that the game was being broadcast live by Eastlink (including colour commentary and slow motion replays) was just awesome for these aspiring young players and will create lifelong memories for our kids.  Thanks go out to the many volunteers involved in putting the tournament together and to Eastlink for broadcasting the games.

Back to the game: having played the Goderich Kinsmen LL1 team multiple times this season our LL2 team knew they had their work cut out for them.  Unfortunately, the Kinsmen squad came out early and netted a quick goal which seemed to put the Scotiabank group on their heels.  Although the Scotiabank squad managed to create some good scoring opportunities they could not put one past the Kinsmen goalie early on and found themselves down 2-0 before Remi W managed to score a nice goal going five-hole at 5:42 of the second period.  Remi’s goal gave the Scotiabank players a nice lift toward the closing minutes of the second period but it wasn’t long before the Kinsmen team struck back with a goal and then they scored another with only ten seconds left in the period to go up 4-1 going into the third.

Sadly, that 4-1 lead proved to be too much for the Scotiabank team who just couldn’t get their scoring touch back against a team that was firing on all cylinders.  The Kinsmen LL1 went on to win the game 7-1.  Although Scotiabank LL2 lost in the final – our group had a fantastic tournament going 4 and 1 and coming away with a silver medal.  Once again – a big thanks to our coaches; John Little and Larry Klein, out trainer, Dan Wilkinson and our Manager Ally Austin for all their work this season.  Congrats to the Goderich Kinsmen LL1 team on their gold medal win – it was a good day for the Goderich Pee Wee local league players.      See table below for LL2’s YCW stats:
