Sailors Can’t Get ‘er Done in Tiverton But Close Weekend with Big Win at Home
The Sailors PeeWee Kinsmen LL played three games in the Wade Simmons Memorial Tournament in Tiverton on Saturday and their games were good/bad/ok.  The Sailors played well in their 8:00 am opening contest beating the Kincardine Flyers 5-1.  The Sailors got on the board early in the first when Sawyer N tapped in a rebound off an Adam R slap shot.

The second period saw the Sailors put on a goal scoring clinic – first Captain Adam R scored a bar-down beauty off his signature slapper from the point (unassisted).  Nine minutes later Spencer W waltzed around multiple Flyers with the puck on a string and then roofed a back-hander (assist to Nolan W).  Then, just 30 seconds later Caden B had a similar rush where he dipsy-doodled around a few Flyers before going five hole (unassisted).  Adam R scored the last Sailor’s goal off a slap shot from behind the red line (unassisted) to put the team up 5-0.  The Flyers managed their lone goal within the closing minutes of the game but the Sailors were never in trouble in this one and they came away with a convincing win.

Sadly, after a 4-hour lay-off the Sailors came in flat-footed against the Ripley Wolves in game 2 at 1:00 pm.  Not sure what happened in this one but the Sailors were sluggish and it was not a good outing for the Kisnmen Crew who lost the game 3-1.  The only highlight of the game was Caden B’s unassisted goal early in the second period.  Caden scored his second sweet goal of the tourney by deking around several Wolves and then tucking in a nifty shot.

Game three at 5:00 pm saw the Sailors return to their regular form and they had a solid outing versus Central Perth.  The Sailors got on the board first in the opening period when Aidan D swatted in the lose puck on a rebound from his brother Liam’s shot giving the Sailors a 1-0 lead.  Unfortunately, Central Perth managed to score the tying goal with only 12 seconds left in the period and they went into the second tied 1-1.

The entire second period and part of the third became an evenly matched affair with both teams playing well.  At 7:21 of the third it was Central Perth who broke the tie and seemed poised to take the win in this close game.  However, Captain Adam R scored another slap shot goal (assisted by Caden B and Noah J) with only a minute left in the third which would end up sending the game into OT.

Although the Sailors played a strong overtime period and created multiple good scoring chances – it was Central Perth who managed to pot the winner.  Nonetheless, the Kinsmen crew had a good day of hockey – nice work Sailors!

After a full day of hockey on Saturday the Sailors played their final game of the weekend against the Drayton Defenders at the Memorial arena on Sunday afternoon.  The Sailors took command of the match early and never slowed down taking the game 5-1.  Jesse V scored the opening goal two minutes into the first (assists to Hudson V and Sawyer N).  Seconds later Spencer W scored the Sailors second goal (assists to Liam D and Aidan D) and the Sailors ended the first up 2-0.

The Sailors continued to control the pace of the game and scored another two unanswered goals in the second period.  The first goal was a keen tip-in by Hudson V who re-directed Kate J’s point shot and the second goal was an unassisted flip shot by Nolan W who threw the puck at the net after a strong rush along the boards.

Similarly, the Sailors dominated most of the third period.  Halfway through the period Spencer W scored his second of the game (assisted by Liam D) which put the Sailors up 5-0.  Although the Sailors continued to play well for the remainder of the third – it was the Defenders who scored the last goal of the game which ended 5-1.  Good outing Sailors and a great way to finish a big w/e of hockey!
