Sailors taken out by the Ironmen
The Atom AE Hyundai Sailors continued their OMHA playdown series with Wingham on Friday night.

Friday’s loss resulted in Wingham winning the series 2-0.

The Sailors came out slow in the first period and struggled to put together chances in the offensive zone. An early penalty for interference to Jordan put the boys on the penalty kill. They worked hard on the penalty kill and managed to keep Wingham off the scoreboard. The Sailors would get their own powerplay opportunity midway through the period with a Wingham player being called for tripping. The Sailors had the Ironmen in their zone with some good chances, but the Ironmen were able to clear the puck in the dying seconds of the penalty and scored a shorthanded goal to open the scoring.

Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of the second period, but it was the Sailors that would strike first scoring the tying goal. The goal was scored by Wesley, assisted by Spencer and Chris. Shortly after scoring, Wesley was called for body contact sending Wingham to the powerplay. The Sailors killed off the penalty without allowing Wingham a quality scoring chance. However, with less than two minutes in the period the Ironmen scored twice. In the opening minute of the third period they would score again. In a span of less than two minutes Wingham opened a 4-1 lead.

The Ironmen scored again early in the third period. The Sailors didn’t quit and continued to press for a goal. They were rewarded with less than 5 minutes to play. Wesley scored assisted by Caden. The Sailors took control of the play keeping Wingham on the defensive in the final minutes of the period. With the goalie out of the net in the final minute, the Sailors pressed for another goal. With a second left, Justin scored assisted by Spencer making the final score 5-3.

Once again, there were many positives in the game. The Sailors did not allow a powerplay goal in the game or series and continue to improve their two-way play. Team offence has improved averaging 3.5 goals per game in the series and has been more balanced with different players contributing.

Next up for the Sailors is a WOAA playoff game in Listowel this Saturday.
