A Hard Fought Battle
This weekend the Atom AE Hyundai Sailors continued the round robin portion of the Neilson Cup with an away game against the Walkerton Capitals. The Sailors only regular season win (6-4) was against the Capitals on November 8, 2014. The other game in the regular season series with Walkerton was a narrow 2-1 loss the following day at the Memorial Arena.

Saturday’s game was a 9:30am start in Walkerton. The Sailors came out strong with several good chances in the first period. Despite being outplayed, the Capitals scored the opening goal of the game with less than a minute to play in the period. The Sailors had one last rush in the first period with a shot by Spencer beating the Walkerton goalie, but it was waved off by the referee as the buzzer was sounding.
The second period was also back and forth with chances for both teams. With less than three minutes to play the action picked up leading to the Capitals extending their lead to 2-0. Less than a minute later the Capitals took a penalty for contact to the head. The Sailors powerplay has struggled recently, but they came out hard and pinned the Capitals in their zone. Justin came out of a scrum behind the net with the puck and put the puck in the net to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Sailors continued to press for the tying goal in the third period. Early in the period Noah was called for tripping a Capital’s player on a partial break. The boys killed the penalty without slowing down their attack leading to several shorthanded chances. They were rewarded for their effort with a little more than a minute left in the period. Spencer’s shot beat the Capitals’ netminder tying the game and setting up an intense finish to the game.
Regulation time ended with the score tied 2-2. The overtime period was just beginning when Jordan was called for charging sending the Sailors to the penalty kill. The Sailors have allowed only a single powerplay goal in the post season and continued their success in killing off the penalty to Jordan. Just as it looked like the overtime would not settle the game, the capitals scored with less than seven seconds to play.
It was a disappointing end to a good effort by the Sailors. Both Kellen and Michael played well in the net. The defence also had a strong game limited the number of second and third chances in front of their own net. The forward lines kept the pressure on the Walkerton defence leading to some good scoring chances.
This Friday the Sailors play the Capitals in the home half of the two game set.
