Atom AE Update
After a hectic pace to begin the season, the Atom Hyundai AE team had an unscheduled break this weekend with Friday’s home game against Wingham being cancelled. The game will likely be rescheduled. The team took the opportunity to work on some things while having a bit of fun in the Parents versus Players game on Saturday.

They came into the break with a 1-11-1 record following a loss and a tie the previous weekend. The team is currently averaging 1.5 goals per game, but have given up an average of 5.7 goals per game. However, they continue to improve and are becoming more consistent for the full 35 minutes. They continue to work on teamwork, defence and positional play in preparation for the upcoming playoffs.

The Sailors began the most recent stretch with a 14-2 loss to the Wingham Ironmen (7-6-0) on December 6, 2014. The two teams are scheduled to play four games this season with two games remaining. The first game of the series was an 8-1 lost to the Ironmen in Wingham on November 15, 2014. Scoring for the Sailors were Spencer and Jordan. A season high in penalty minutes prevented the Sailors from gaining any momentum in the game.

The Sailors bounced back with a solid team effort on Sunday versus the
Kincardine Kinucks. The Kinucks are ahead of the Sailors in the standing with a record of 6-6-1. The previous meeting between the teams was a 4-3 loss on November 16, 2014 at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

The Sailors played a strong first period, but again gave up an early goal and had to play from behind. The team managed to kill off a penalty, but could not tie the score until the second period. The Kinucks would regain the lead before the period ended. Spencer scored his team leading 10th regular season goal assisted by Kaelan and Wesley. Wesley leads the team in assists with four during the regular season.

The team worked hard to get the tying goal and were rewarded early in the third period when Jordan scored an unassisted shorthanded goal. Jordan’s goal was his fourth of the season and third in three games. The teams traded chances in the final minutes of the period, but the goalies for both teams had a strong finish.

Saturday’s Parents versus Players was a run-and-gun affair with little defence, but a lot of fun. Both goalies saw lots of action and each making some nice saves.

The regular season resumes this weekend. The Atom AE team has three games remaining including a game Saturday afternoon against the West Grey Warriors (2-8-1) at the Maitland Recreation Centre. In their previous meeting on October 26, 2014 the Warriors won 7-2, but have struggled since.
