Atom Sailorettes win Pink Ribbon of Hope Challenge Cup
The Mcgeemotors.ca Atom A Sailorettes returned from Cobourg late Saturday night with a gold medal and the championship Challenge Cup from the West Northumberland Pink Ribbon of Hope tournament.
The girls had a great weekend together enjoying fun times and good hockey. On Friday during round robin play, the girls defeated the Clearview Ice Cats and the Ottawa Ice, 3-0 respectively. They returned to the hotel for some chillin time and a team potluck.
Saturday morning at 9am saw the girls face off against the Whitby Wolves. The game was fast-paced with lots of back and forth action. The girls would jump to a 2-0 lead however, a gritty Whitby team would fight back and tie up the game late in the third, 2-2. The game would end in a tie and both teams were tied for 1st place with 5 points each.
The Sailorettes final round robin game saw them face off against the home town West Northumberland Wild. The girls were sluggish to start and would find themselves down 2-0 early in the game. The girls would persevere and score 4 goals to win the game 4-2 and secure themselves a spot in the finals at 6pm against Whitby.
The final was a repeat of the 9am game with the Sailorettes taking an early lead. However, this game would end differently as the Sailorettes continued to pressure the Wolves and would score 4 goals while not allowing Whitby to score any. The girls were determined to win their first tournament together as a team and it was evident to every at Jack Heenan Arena in Cobourg that no one was going to stop them.
Well done girls.
