McGee Motors Novice Reps WOAA Champs!!
The McGee Motors Novice Reps hosted the Mt. Forest Rams on Saturday morning and came out with a 2-1 win, winning the WOAA Consolation Championship six points to zero.
The Mt. Forest Rams were not going to lay down and quit and it showed from the opening puck drop as they came early and often into the Sailors end, however Keon stood tall and kept his team in the game, keeping the first period scoreless heading to the second.
In the second period the Mt. Forest Rams went up 1-0 when the puck came into the slot and a Rams forward slid a backhand into an open side of the net.
However the Sailors were not going to be beat on their home ice, with such a large crowd that came out to support them. Half way through the second, Iain took a pass from Devlin and cut around the lone defenceman firing a high shot over the outstretched glove of the Rams netminder tying the game at one.
In the third the Sailors continued to apply the pressure and with six minutes remaining Graham took a pass from Mason fired a shot on net that seemed to "handcuff" the Rams netminder and squeaked loose where Iain was waiting and fired the puck into the open net for a 2-1 lead.
In the final minutes the parents, coaches and players were biting their nails as the Rams continued to apply the pressure and pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker looking for the tying goal. However these young Sailors that have come a long way from the start of the season, worked as a team, pinning the puck along the boards and chipping it out when they had the opportunity. Keon made a couple late saves, and the McGee Motors Novice Reps held on for a 2-1 victory and were named the 2014/15 WOAA Consolation Champions.
This group of young athletes over the final three months of the season, bought into what the coaches continued to preach to them, that being aggressive and working together as a team will have positive results. This team gelled when it mattered most and all became very close teammates and most importantly good friends throughout this season. All of you should be very proud of one another, as us, as parents are defintely proud of each and every one of you. Congrats Sailors to a very successful 2014/15 season!!!
