Sailors Lose a Nail Biter and Tie Seaforth Over the Weekend
On the weekend of January 17th and 18th the drastically improving McGee Motors Novice Reps played a pair games.
On Saturday the team traveled to Clinton to face one of the top teams in the division, the BCH Ice Dogs. BCH has dominated the season series against the Sailors, however the Sailors have been implementing what they have been practicing by moving the puck and being aggressive and last time out, tied BCH 3-3.
This game was a nail biter right from the opening face off, as BCH opened the scoring, but the McGee Motors Novice Reps battled back in the second with a Iain ripping a wrist shot high over the BCH goalies out stretched glove, after receiving a great pass from Aiden.
The third was more of the same as the Sailor forwards fore checked hard creating turnovers and firing shots at the BCH goalie, but it was the Ice Dogs that bulged the twine next going up 2-1 early in the third period. But don't count out these new and improved Sailors as they continued playing their game when Sawyer created a turn over and fired a cross crease pass to Mason who "one timed" the shot past the BCH goalie evening the score at two.
The teams continued to battle back and forth with Keon turning away the Ice Dogs at every opportunity and the Sailors defence clearing rebounds and moving the puck up to their forwards. But it was not meant to be as the Ice Dogs scored with 46 seconds left in the final period to win 3-2. There were a few disappointing faces in the dressing room after the game as these kids new how close they were to beating a top division rival, however these kids made their parents and coaches very proud with the effort and attention to detail they showed. Hardest Working Player of the Game helmet went to Aiden for his hard work in both ends of the ice, making great passes and covering for his defence when they made a rush. Nice Job!!
On Sunday the McGee Motors Novice Reps hosted the Seaforth Stars in an exhibition battle. Seaforth is second in their division. The Sailors continued to show their coaches and parents that they excel when they play as a team, moving the puck and being aggressive.
The Sailors went up 1-0 when Iain took a quick wrist shot from the face off circle, and then followed that up with a breakaway goal going up 2-0 with assists from Ella and Sawyer. However the Seaforth Stars battled back with their best player scoring two quick goals tying the game at two at the end of the second period.
The third was more of the same as the Sailors continued to battle and Keon stood tall between the pipes turning the Stars away at every opportunity. The Sailors continued to drive the net and it finally paid off as Ryan picked up a rebound and fired a back hand past the Stars goalie, after Logan and Devlin battled in the corners and moved the puck to the front of the net. However with 39 seconds left the Stars tied the game at three as their best player completed his hat trick, ending the contest in a draw. The Hardest Working Player of the Game helmet went to Sawyer for his intense fore checking, hard back checking and his ability to utilize his teammates.
The McGee Motors Novice Reps are buying into their practices and it is showing in games, as this team is aggressive, fore checking and back checking with intensity, and playing as a team, passing the puck with ease. Keep it up Sailors!!
