Great Hockey and Drama in Seaforth!
February 8-10 – Doug Perkes Memorial Tournament.  The Sailors travelled to Seaforth for the Annual Doug Perkes Peewee LL Memorial Tournament.  The first game was against the dreaded Mt. Brydges Cougars whom have a reputation for playing dirty – and DIRTY they were!  While the Cougars were the first on the scoreboard shortly into the game, Tyler answered back near the end of the first period with a killer angle shot into the top shelf.  The go-ahead goal came on a scoring chance by Justin with a rebound by Alex.  By this point in the game, Mt. Brydges was showing their true colours, with 3 players in the penalty box, psycho coaches and even more psycho parents.

Even with the resulting injuries and insults to the Sailors, the boys held their ground and Tristan made a beautiful pass to Tyler who landed the third goal for Goderich with a wicked slap shot!  Tom was superb in net and even stopped a penalty shot to retain the lead at 3-1.   Even with another lucky goal by the Cougars in the third period, Alex sealed the deal for the Sailors with a nicely placed shot to win the game 4-1.  The boys all played an awesome game and moved the puck beautifully.  The drama during and following the game as a result of the ‘crazy cougars’ was pathetic – but the Sailors outclassed them and prevailed!

The second game of the tournament was thankfully against the much more civilized Lambeth Lancers.  Unfortunately, the Sailors were off their ‘A game’ from the day before and got off to a slow start.  The nice goals by Justin, Tyler and Tristan were not enough to match the goals by the formidable Lancers and the Sailors could not close the goal margin - despite coming alive in the third period. The final game of the tournament was a spectacular performance by all the Sailors and proved to be one of the best games of the year.

Up against a familiar rival (the BCH Ice Dogs), Goderich dominated the entire game with at least a 10-1 shots on net ratio!  Nevertheless, just like in the regular season, the skill of the BCH goalie once again shutdown numerous scoring attempts by the Sailors.  It wasn’t until an amazing top shelf shot by David (on a set-up from Tristan) that the Sailors finally got on the score board with a minute left in the second period.  Hungry for the points they needed to move on the tournament, the boys continued to hammer away at the BCH goalie and Tyler landed the second and final goal on an empty BCH net.

Despite an awesome performance by the offensive and defensive lines and Mike in net, the Sailors were half a point shy of making the semi-finals.  However, the boys should be very proud of themselves for showing strong teamwork and good sportsmanship throughout the tournament (even with the attacks of an out of control Mt. Brydges team).  The final 2-0 victory ended the tournament on a high note and should position the Sailors for a strong performance in the playoffs!
