‘A’ Championship Finalists in Schomberg!!
January 12–Schomberg
Peewee Tournament. The Sailors travelled to Schomberg Ontario on January 12 for
the town’s Annual Peewee Tournament.
Nine teams were paired-up for the tournament from northern and southern
Ontario. The first game for the
Sailors had them face off against the Schomberg Red Wings. The Sailors came out strong in the
first period with the first goal going to Tyler on a nice set-up from Justin and
Nathan. Justin landed the second
goal on a nice pass from Nathan.
The Red Wings bounced back and made it 2-1, but that goal was soon
answered by Snowden on a deflection shot.
Alex rounded out the first period with a goal that made it 4-1 on an
assist from Justin.
Schomberg battled back in the second period with 3 goals – but their efforts were countered by 2 more Goderich goals by David and Alex (on assists from Christian, Braeden and Snowden). Holding the lead at 6-4, the Sailors played a very strong defensive third period. Mike was on fire in net throughout the entire game and earned a much deserved game MVP award! The next match was against the Bradford Bulldogs (many of whom were big enough to be Bantam’s) – but that didn’t scare the Sailors who once again came out fighting for the win. Justin landed the first goal in the first period with a set-up from Snowden. For the second period, the two teammates decided to reverse their play and Snowden secured the second goal of the game on a set-up from Justin. Despite the many attempts and rough play of the Bulldogs, the Sailors held their own and shut them down to earn their second win at 2-0. Tom was a wall in net with some amazing glove saves and got the shutout – and was a easy choice for the game MVP! The Sailors superb first two games and points gained them a top rank in points and landed them in the ‘A’ Championship Game against the other Schomberg team. In what proved to be a rough and crazy game (no need to explain if you were there), the Sailors had many scoring opportunities and outplayed the Red Wings for most of the game. Lucas landed the first goal for Goderich in the second period (assisted by Tyler and David). Alex got the second goal for the Sailors in the third period on an assist from Snowden. Unfortunately, the play didn’t reflect the game itself and the Red Wings still managed to secure the win at 4-2. Justin was awarded the championship game MVP award for his contributions in all three games. Overall the kids ALL played an amazing tournament with superb teamwork that made their coaches and fans extremely proud. Number 2 out of nine team is definitely something to be proud of – especially considering the caliber of the team they were matched against. Way to go Sailors – display your winning hardware proudly!
