Atom Sailors Played in the "Under the Lock" Tournament in Peterborough!!!
The Atom Sailors particpated in the Historic "Under the Lock" outdoor Tournament this past weekend in Peterborough coming away with a Silver Medal!!!
This past weekend will go down as one of the best weekends of hockey that can be experienced by the players, the parents, the fans and by the Coaches. The Atom Sailors traveled through some very poor weather to Peterborough to play in an Outdoor Tournament on the Lock System in the City. In going there, we weren't sure what to expect from the rinks, the change rooms, the opposing teams and lastly from the weather!
The experience was just breath taking, literally as the boys played in -22 degree weather each morning and the addition of all of CBC's Hockey Day in Canada Festivities, just added to the overall experience starting at the Banquet on the Friday evening, games on Saturday along with the Pete's game that evening, finally capping things off with our boys playing in the Atom Championship game on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon! What a weekend, especially if you needed to book a hotel room in Peterborough!!!
There were 5 rinks in total with the demensions roughly 170ft by 45 ft (due to the heavy snowfall) and many different variations to regular rules due to the side boards being snow banks, the benches being right on the ice surface, players assessed a penality having to crawl up a snow bank to serve the time and the Zamboni being the players and Coaches using shovels to scrape off the ice! Old time pond hockey at its best!!!
This tournament was just an awesome experience for the players and parents and our Goderich Spirit was on full display with some loud and proud cheering from our parents showing many other Communities in Ontario how to display class and sportsmanship in our game!!!! Again, just awesome!!!
Great job Sailors in getting to the finals, we are all very proud of you!!!!
