Important Information Regarding the 2019-20 Season
Submitted By Brad Bell on Thursday, May 30, 2019
Dear GMHI Membership,

After detailed review and lengthy thought and discussion, the GMHI Executive passed a motion at its regular meeting on May 28, 2019 to defer registration of most GMHI “Rep” hockey programming for the 2019-20 hockey season.

This decision was made in response to numerous requests from our members along with a continuing decline in enrolment both from players leaving GMHI to play at a higher level of hockey or simply losing interest.

A small committee has entered into formal discussions with our neighbouring associations, BCH and Seaforth to find ways to satisfy the desire (and need) of our players to play hockey at their “just right” levels.  Many of our members are justifiably frustrated by the limits placed on our players by our numbers and demographics. We firmly believe that by working collaboratively with BCH and Seaforth, we will be able to enjoy a more appropriately competitive level of hockey for ALL of our players.  This will be achieved by collectively offering a full range of programming, including all of Rep, AE, and local league hockey to our players. This decision is in the best interest of our players, and their development in and enjoyment of the game of hockey.

It is our intention to evaluate each age level (Atom and above) independently.  We will work with BCH (the central organization) to ensure all “Rep-calibre” players have an opportunity to play Rep hockey this year, at either the Rep or Additional Entry (AE) category. This will require player sharing, as well as ice sharing.  Rep programming will almost exclusively be centred out of BCH with hope that all players who wish to and are of the appropriate calibre can enjoy competitive hockey with BCH, close to home. We are hoping that AE and local league hockey can be more locally centred.

In the very near future, we will be sharing a “frequently asked questions” document that will answer most of the anticipated questions members may have. In the meantime, Executive members have been asked not to discuss specifics of the pending arrangements until those arrangements are more firm.  Also, all hockey related registrations, transfers, permissions to skate, etc., will be handled by GMHI as per usual, under no circumstances should members contact BCH or Seaforth for any hockey related needs.

We thank you for your patience throughout this process, and assure you that all decisions are being made responsibly, in the interest of the development and well-being of all players, and for the long-term future of hockey for the young people of Goderich and surrounding area. We look forward to sharing additional information with you in the very near future.

Yours in hockey,

Brad Bell
GMHI President
