Year End Wrap up
Not all successes are built on winning.  The definition of a success is defined as… “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose” Our team this year lived this definition from day one. Our goal this year was to succeed as a team and grow as individuals.
We had two main rules this year:  1. have fun  and  2. work hard… Our team this year met both of these standards.

It’s never easy to go through a season on the downside of the scoring sheet but every player that wore the Atom Mainstreet Credit Union Rep jersey this year wore it with pride and represented the team and the town respectively. There was never a game that we gave up. There was never a team that we wouldn’t face with grit and determination. Every team that came to play us this year knew they would have to bring their best because Goderich never gives up.  We had the normal trials and tribulations of every season:  phantom and disallowed goals, blowouts, ties and well-deserved victory‘s. None more well-deserved then at 10 - 4 victory in playoffs followed by two very close losses to teams that just thought they were going to “clean the floor with us”; we proved to them that wasn’t the case.

It’s unfortunate that the global happenings cut our season short.  The plan to attend the year-end Aylmer tournament like so many other teams from our centre has been put aside in order to protect each other from an invisible enemy that is much bigger then any sport.  Despite this setback, we can still celebrate the end of yet another wonderful hockey season.  Although we will have to wait to put into practice all of the skills and tactics we learned throughout the year, our growth as both a team and individual players has been a complete success.  Although our time as one team has been shortened,  I urge you all to take what you’ve learned this year and practice it, perfect it, and bring it to the rink for your next team and teammates. I see many of you continuing  to hone your shooting, agility, strength and passing on social media.  We talked about this many times in practice that the things learned at the rink are only 40% of what it takes to be successful on the rink.  Share and learn together.  Push each other to the next level and remember your success is built on the ability to never stop learning.

Lastly but surely not least I need to thank my coaching staff. The machine doesn’t work without all of the parts and I couldn’t have asked for a better set of teammates by my side.  Thanks to Jamie Stanley, Nathan Daer (trainer of the year), Matt VandenHeuvel, Colin Carmichael and Tara Corriveau for all of your hard work and dedication to this team and all of its players. The thing I appreciate most about being able to coach these wonderful athletes is not only what I learned from each of them but what I learned from you. You all bring something special to the table whether you played hockey or not.  These are traits that are essential to the success of a team that can’t be learned in a locker room or on the rink.  These are the personal traits, patience, understanding, respect, trust, and drive, that you bring to our team!  I have learned from all of you and for that I thank you.

Our award winners this year as chosen by our coaching staff:
Most dedicated: Griffin Karges
Most sportsmanlike: William Carmichael
Most improved: Carson VandenHeuvel

Gregg “Sporty” Dewinter Award - awarded annually to one Atom player on each Atom team, having the 'sporty' spirit- who is a great friend, teammate, and player who works hard each and every shift, who may not score a lot of goals but is always the hardest working player on the ice:  Cohen Denomme
