Initiation Program (IP) Welcome & Information
Hello 2017-18 Initiation Program (IP) Families!  Welcome to the 2017-18 hockey season. Your calendar is now populated on the GMHI website!

A few important items for you:

COACH - Your program coach is Matt MacPhee @ [email protected]. He has been working hard to gather a staff of good hockey people to run the program. If you are willing to help out and have not been contacted yet, please reach out to Matt.

HOCKEY READINESS - We are very happy to say that out IP program is at its capacity, with a few children on a waiting list (if you have registered but changed your mind, please contact me immediately). Our expectation of registrants for the program is that children will be able to stand on their own, and move. If your child can not function independently, and you are not able to get on the ice with him/her (VSS and CSA approved helmet are required for all on-ice helpers), please contact me immediately. If your child is brand new to skating, we highly recommend a year in CanSkate before entering the IP program.

START DATE - Your first structured IP skate is Saturday, September 30. We have ice booked on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 from 5-6pm for an IP Family Skate. This is an opportunity for families to get on the ice together, check out how the equipment fits, and ask your coaches how to fit equipment if needed (e.g., stick length - remembering the blade to shaft ratio for kids sticks is not the same as adult sticks (err on the side of longer - you can always cut more off)). Players are encouraged to dress in full gear (no pucks, please), but a minimum of helmet with mask and gloves. Adults are strongly encouraged to wear CSA approved helmets.

IP WEEKLY ICE TIMES ARE TUESDAYS 5-6pm and SATURDAYS 10-11am at the MRC. Watch for picture day on the calendar - it is at MEMORIAL ARENA. Please refer to the calendar regularly. Although your ice times are the same each week, special events (tournaments, etc), do disrupt the flow on occasion.TIMBITS GARB - Players will be provided with Timbits jerseys and socks in mid-late October, which means they will need their own gear for the first number of weeks.PROGRAM STRUCTURE - The IP program will be a station-based, skating/skills program (with a (very) strong emphasis on skating). Hockey Canada has mandated NO FULL ICE GAME PLAY, so please do not expect your coach to schedule 5-on-5, full ice hockey games. The sanctions for doing so are severe. Hockey Canada provides a very structured program for coaches to follow.

We look forward to a great season ahead. Should you have any programming questions, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected] (with a copy to Coach Matt). See you at the rink!
