Welland Tournament Tests Sailors’ Mettle
The weekend tournament in Welland was great preparation for the PeeWee Scotiabank LL2 as they near the play-offs.  Friday night’s game versus a relentless Barrie team had the Sailors on their heels and it was a lesson in tenacity and constant pressure.  The Sailor’s lone goal in the 5-1 loss was scored by Liam D – who took a shot from the corner at an impossible angle that caught the Barrie net-minder off guard (assists went to Joey C and Kaleb C).   After that, the fast moving Barrie team controlled the pace and didn’t give the Sailors time or space to set-up many shots on net.

The Saturday morning game against Welland #2 was a much better game for the Sailors who came away with a 6-3 win.  Although Goderich eventually found their scoring touch it took some time with 4 of their 6 goals coming in the third period.   The goal of the game was scored by Jack L (assists to Joey C and Jensen P) when he cut across the front of the net before absolutely roofing a nice back-hander.

The early morning victory celebration didn’t last long as the Sailors retuned to the Welland arena for their mid-afternoon face-off against the Welland #3 team.  The final game of the tournament for the Sailors was a battle.  After coming out a little flat, the Sailors were down 3-0 after the first period.  However, in the second period Goderich levered off of goalie Grayson O’s strong play as they eliminated Welland’s momentum and ended up scoring the lone goal of the second period.

Welland came out strong in the third and scored a quick goal taking a 4-1 lead that appeared to secure the win. However, the Sailors’ surged and managed to score two third period goals just fifteen seconds apart.  The Sailors were suddenly back in the game and other teams in the tournament showed their appreciation of the Sailor’s effort by chanting “let’s go Goderich.”  Late in the third the atmosphere was feisty as the skirmish went right to the end when Goderich pulled their goal in a last ditch effort to tie the game.  Sadly, Welland managed to strip the puck from the charging Sailors and scored on the empty net.  Welland went on to win the game 5-3. Nonetheless – the Sailors played an exciting game and came away from the tournament with their heads held high.

One thing is for sure – the Sailors missed defenseman Cole W who was home sick this weekend – if we had our blue-line stalwart things would have been different in game 3.

Many thanks to our coaches “Trapper” John Little and Larry “You’ve seen ‘em both” Klein, our trainer Dan “Heels to head” Wilkinson and tournament organizer and team manager Allyson “I kneed your phone” Austin.    Thanks also go out to Keon P who made the trip and provided back-up to Grayson O.  Finally, Pam – I made you a copy of one of my favourite albums – “Tattoo You” - it comes with a black sharpie and a green highlighter for one of your creative bursts.   Tournament stats follow:
