Lions PeeWee Rep Win Lucknow Legion Championship
From November 12-14, 2015 the Goderich Lions PeeWee Rep Team travelled to compete in the Lucknow Legion PeeWee Rep Tournament.  After a tough loss on Thursday evening (to the eventual "A" Championship winners, the Kincardine Kinucks), the Sailors played three very close and high tempo games to clinch the "B" Championship.

Saturday's first game was versus the Seaforth Stars. Seaforth struck first, but only seven seconds later the Sailors responded by tying the game with a nice goal by Murray, assisted by Dickson and Larkin. Seaforth again took the lead with one minute remaining in the second period, but again the Sailors would draw even with them with only 2 seconds remaining, courtesy of timely breakaway goal put home by McBride, assisted by Greer and Hoggarth. A quick start to the third period saw Gillam score less than a minute in, assisted by Murray and McBride to give us the lead. The rest of the period saw end to end action, but with good goaltending from Volland and tough play from the Sailors, the team secured their spot in the semi-finals.

The semi-final game saw the Wingham Ironmen come out fast and score only a minute into the first period. However, the Sailors found their stride and dominated play for the remainder of the game. A goal late in the first from Austin, assisted by Buchanan tied it up. In the second period the Sailors took the lead at the seven-minute mark with a goal by Stinson, assisted by Austin and Cox. The Ironmen struck again with 2 minutes left in the period to tie it up. Goderich continued to play hard in the third period and their relentless push saw them wear down the Ironmen and Buchanan handed the Sailors the lead with a nice goal midway through the period. Another quick goal by Austin, assisted by Gillam sealed the deal and sent the Sailors to the Final.

The Final (and third game of the day for our team) saw the Sailors digging deep against a very strong and fast South Huron Sabres. The first period was extremely exciting with action in both ends, and great passing and skating from both teams. Despite a great effort from both teams, the first period ended scoreless. The second period was more of the same, but midway through the period the Sabres hit the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Through the third period the Sailors continued to rally hard despite being behind, and with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, their efforts were rewarded with a much needed goal by Dickson to keep the team alive! The tough play continued and it seemed as though we were heading for overtime. With 29 seconds remaining, South Huron called a time-out to organize their offensive-zone face-off. When the puck was dropped, Murray won the draw to Cox, who then passed to Gillam who was breaking out of the zone. Then in what seemed like slow-motion to onlookers, Gillam fed the puck up the middle Murray, who then found McBride streaking up the far side. Murray and McBride then partnered up and flew in 2 on 1, with McBride finding the tape of Murray's stick and Murray putting the puck home to give the Sailors the lead with only 6.9 seconds remaining in the game! Coach McBride then called a time-out to settle the team and re-focus. The Sailors won the final draw and kept the Sabres at bay to seal the victory!

As always, a thank you goes out to our team sponsor, the Goderich Lions Club. A special thank you is extended to the Goderich Legion Branch 109 for sponsoring our entry to the tournament. The team is proud to be able to hand the trophy over to you to display for the year!

Congratulations, team, you played a very gritty and determined tournament. Even when behind, there was no "quit" in anyone. This work ethic has seen you rewarded, both in this tournament and our regular season games up to now. Keep up the great work!!!
