Another Busy Weekend for Mainstreet Atom Rep
The Mainstreet Atom Rep Sailors played two games on the weekend and opened the week Monday night with a game in Mildmay against the South Bruce Blades. The Sailors played the Kincardine Kinucks on Sunday afternoon sandwiched between a home and home with South Bruce on Saturday and Monday.

Saturday’s game was at the Maitland Recreation Centre against South Bruce (0-8-0). The Blades’ team is made up of mostly second year players with only four first year players in the line-up. The Sailors came out flat on Saturday, but traded chances with the Blades until late in the period. With just over a minute to play in the first period, South Bruce opened the scoring.

South Bruce extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second period and the Sailors had to work to get back into the game. Before the midway point in the period Iain was called for a body contact penalty and the Sailors went on the penalty kill. Late in the penalty the Blades scored to make their lead 3-0.

Down by three goals, the Sailors opened the third in need of a goal. Less than two minutes into the period, Iain scored an unassisted goal to cut the South Bruce lead to two goals. Less than a minute later, Iain scored again assisted by Austin to bring the Sailors to within one goal. The Sailors tied the game just before the midway point of the period on a goal by Aiden, assisted by Gryffin.

With the score tied 3-3, the two teams traded chances for the go ahead goal. With just over two minutes to play, South Bruce managed to put the puck in the net to take the lead 4-3. Wesley had a chance to tie the game with a partial break down the left wing, but shot the puck off the South Bruce goalie’s mask. The Sailors did not quit and tried to even the score in the final two minutes, but ran out of time.

Sunday’s game against the division leading Kincardine Kinucks (9-0-1) was the third of four games against the Kinucks. The Sailors (1-7-0) had lost the previous two 15-1 and 13-1 prior to this game at the Memorial Arena. The Mainstreet Sailors were keen to play at the old barn and came out playing hard.

The Kinucks opened the scoring two minutes into the first period and added two more late in the period to lead 3-0 going into the second period. Kincardine’s second goal came 10 seconds into a powerplay with Justin being called for an elbowing penalty. The Sailors killed off a late penalty to Jared for tripping and finished the period strong.

The second period was again the Sailors’ best against the Kinucks. The Kinucks scored early in the period to extend their lead to 4-0. The Sailors had a powerplay opportunity with the Kinucks being called for a roughing penalty. The boys were not able to score on the power play. Late in the period the Kinucks added to their lead 5-0. The Sailors ended the second period on the powerplay with Kincardine being called for interference. The Kinucks added three goals to their lead in the third period for an 8-0 win over the Sailors. Goderich managed to kill off one of the two penalties to Iain in the period for slashing and body contact.

On Monday night the Sailors’ played the away portion of the home and home with the South Bruce Blades. The game featured two teams with identical 1-8-0 record and tied for fifth place in the division trying to win their second game of the regular season. The Blades first win of the season was Saturday at the expense of the Sailors. The Sailors were looking to redeem themselves with a win.

The Sailors played an aggressive game and out chanced the Blades, but lost 4-2. Once again the Sailors gave up an early goal and were unable to recover despite a third period rally that fell just short.

The Sailors played two solid periods on Monday night to start the game, but trailed 3-0 after the second period. The Sailors continued their strong play in the third period and were rewarded with a goal scored by Justin to cut the lead to two goals. The Sailors quickly struck again with Iain feeding a nice pass across the goal crease to Wesley who chipped the puck into the back of the net to make the score 3-2 with over five minutes to play.

The Sailors continued to press hard to tie the game, but could not beat the Blades netminder. A late penalty for too many players on the ice allowed South Bruce a man advantage with less than a minute to play. The Blades scored with 3.2 seconds remaining to secure the win 4-2.

The Sailors continue to show signs of putting everything together. The defence played well keeping forwards to the outside and moving the puck quickly out of their zone. The forwards had many quality scoring opportunities as a result of some good passing. It was also a team effort along the boards.

Next up for the Sailors (1-9-0) is a break from regular season action to participate in the Wingham Silver Stick tournament from November 29 to December 6, 2015. The Sailors play their first game of the tournament on Sunday November 29th versus South Huron Sabres. The following weekend features games against the Kincardine Kinucks on Saturday December 5, 2015 and Saugeen Shores Storm on Sunday December 6, 2015. Good Luck Sailors!
