First Win of the Season for Mainstreet Atom Sailors!
The Mainstreet Atom Sailors won their first regular season game 4-3 over the Seaforth Stars on Thursday night. The Sailors opened the scoring and didn’t look back.  There were only a few tense moments when Seaforth tried to make a late third period comeback.

The Sailors (0-4-0) were returning to regular season action on Thursday night after the Sailors’ tournament last weekend.  Thursday’s action was a home game at the Maitland Recreation Centre against the Seaforth Stars (0-2-0).  Seaforth has only played two regular season games, but were 3-5 in exhibition games before the beginning of the season.

The Sailors came out strong and dominated the play for much of the game. The Stars had several opportunities turn away by the goal posts early in the game. Late in the first period the Sailors opened the scoring with a goal from Iain, assisted by Aiden.  The Sailors had the Stars deep in their zone and after a couple of chances Iain was able to put the rebound in the net.

The Sailors extended their lead early in the second period with an unassisted goal from Caeleb.  Caleab carried the puck up right wing with his linemates changing. A good low shot went through the Stars’ goalie.  Seaforth scored late in the period to make it a 2-1 game.

Early in the third period the Sailors won the faceoff to the left of the Stars’ net.  Evan gained control of the puck and spun around with a shot through a forest of legs which beat the Stars’ goalie.  Less than a minute later, Caeleb was called for a tripping penalty sending the Sailors to the penalty kill.  Midway through the penalty Iain and Wesley got a breakaway together. Iain scored with the assist to Wesley.  The boys managed to kill the remaining time in the penalty and lead 3-1.

The Sailors had to kill a second penalty near the midway point of the third period with Evan being called for a hooking penalty.  Goderich was successful in killing off the penalty, but the momentum began to swing in favour of the Stars.  With three minutes to play the Stars scored cutting the Sailors lead to 4-2.  Less than thirty seconds later the Stars scored again.  Seaforth continued to press for the tying goal, but the Sailors managed to hang on for the win.

Once again the defence made a strong effort to keep the opposition forwards to the outside and away from the front of the net.  Kellen played a strong game in goal and got some help from the goal posts early in the game.  The forwards had numerous scoring chances.

Next up is another home game for the Sailors on Saturday afternoon against the Mitchell Meteors.
