Sunday Evening Battle
Sunday night the Goderich Sailors Zehrs Markets Atom team travelled to Wingham to battle the Ironmen in an exhibition game. The Sailors would have two AP players join them this game, helping to give them two lines.
Goderich once again played up tempo hockey creating chances in the Wingham end as well as stopping any chances the Ironmen created. With just under a minutes left in the first period, Wingham was able to smack a rebound home under the pads of the Goderich goaltender to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
After some words of encouragement from their coach, the Sailors came out playing hard once again to begin the second period. This hard work would pay off as Jaden would score on a breakaway halfway through the period to tie the game at 1-1, then Jaden would score again on another breakaway with just under two minutes left in the period giving Goderich a 2-1 lead. This lead would be short lived however, as the Ironmen would tie the game at 2-2 only 18 seconds later, sending this game into the third period with an even score.
The third period would be exciting as both teams would create scoring opportunities from start to finish. Matthew held his ground in the Sailors net as he did all game, doing his part in giving Goderich their chance at a win. As much as Goderich would push to try to get that go ahead goal, they were simply unable to find the back of the net and would skate the final period to a scoreless draw giving them a 2-2 final score.
This is the first game of the season the team has not lost, even though this was an exhibition game and does not count in the regular season standings, the team has a moral victory with this one knowing they played a hard game and were just one bounce away from a win. Great team effort.
