Atom girls finish 2nd in District Playdowns
The McGee Motors.ca atom girls are currently taking part in the OWHA playdowns in their bid to make it to the Provincials, April 11-13, 2008.
Regional Playdowns started February 1 and are to be finished Feb 15th. 6 teams in the south (District 29) playing off with top 3 teams advancing to Regional Playdowns vs Top 3 teams from the north (District 27).
Each team has to play 3 games with Goderich facing off against Seaforth, Milverton and Stratford.
The Sailorettes tied Seaforth 2-2, beat Stratford 4-0 and beat Milverton 5-0 to finish with 5 points. At the end of the first round, Goderich and Seaforth were tied with 5 points but Seaforth would finish first after having 4 more goals +/- than Goderich.
The second round of Regional Playdowns started Feb 16th. Same format as first round. Top 3 teams from District 27 play off against top 3 teams from District 29 and top 3 teams advance to Provincial finals in April.
Goderich is playing against Markdale, Meaford and Owen Sound.
The McGee Motors.ca Atom girls travelled to Markdale on Sat Feb 22 and came home with 1 point as the teams tied 1-1. The game was a fierce competition and the local girls still were having difficulty getting the puck past the Markdale goalie. Scoring the lone Goderich goal was Megan Johnston.
The Sailorettes then hosted the Meaford Mustangs on Sunday Feb 23 and it was a different story. The girls came out flying and scored 15 seconds into the game to take the lead. They would never look back and would go on to dominate the girls from Meaford 6-0. Scoring for Goderich was Becky Higgs (2), Courtney Gardiner, Hailey Bakker, Bryanna Campbell and Ashley Bakker. What set this game apart from the last four games was the passing. The Sailorettes have found their game and their offence again. Each goal was assisted by one or two other players to make this a total team effort.
The Sailorettes travel to Owen Sound on Wed Feb 27th for a 7:30pm game at the Coliseum.
